The Last Lions (2011) | intense and beautifully shot (and narrated by Scar/Jeremy Irons himself!), this doc is worth the watch even though the anthropomorphic script gets a bit heavy-handed and silly.

Page One: Inside the New York Times (2011): not a particularly remarkable documentary, but one that’s a good reminder of what good journalism should/can be (and that David Carr rocks).

From the Sky Down (2011) | this doc chronicling the making of U2’s Achtung Baby (one of my favorite albums of all time, frankly) has a couple of interesting moments here and there, but it’s mainly a snoozefest full of disembodied talking head voiceovers and lackluster storytelling.

Pearl Jam Twenty (2011) | this doc boasts an amazing collection of footage and woulda been almost perfect had the writer-director (Cameron Crowe) not occasionally injected himself into the story.

Project Nim (2011) | a truly fascinating and well-made doc that chronicles the extraordinary and sometimes heartbreaking story of Nim, a chimpanzee who was adopted by humans a birth and taught sign language.

Senna (2010) | i wasn’t as wow-ed by this doc as some people were, possibly because i don’t follow F1, but i did find the second half of the film to be more engaging.

Lost in La Mancha (2002) | this behind-the-scenes doc about the clusterfuck that was Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is a must-see for anyone interested in filmmaking because it’s proof that sometimes, everything that can go wrong will go wrong on a production.

Camp Victory, Afghanistan (2010) | it’s a shame that this powerful and complex documentary about the bond between an Afghan military battalion and its U.S. National Guard advisers was so overlooked (in favor of Restrepo).

I Wish I Knew | the latest documentary by Jia Zhang Ke is beautifully shot and full of fascinating personal stories that revolve around the history of Shanghai, but the confounding and ridiculously distracting shots of a mysterious random woman roaming around the city (meant to somehow interweave these anecdotes) kind of killed it.

Young@Heart | you know you’re watching something awesome when a film begins with a rendition of a Clash song by a 92 year-old lady. it’s a touching and hilarious doc chronicling the musical stylings of a senior choir group, average age 80 years young. in the immortal words of Cher Horowitz, “old people can be so sweet!”

Showrunners is a documentary feature about the storytellers of modern American television. Working as both producers and writers, these extraordinary people attack a job that has become infinitely more complicated and demanding over the past decade. They undertake a daily battle between art and commerce to realize their creative visions in an always-intriguing tug-a-war with the broadcast networks. This is a film about how these storytellers create and the costs they pay to make shows that can captivate millions of viewers each week.
Featuring Sons of Anarchy’s own Kurt Sutter.
